With 7,814 attendees, we are undoubtedly among the largest congresses of a Spanish scientific society. This is what SEPA achieved with the Congress of Periodontology and Oral Health, held in Barcelona from November 26 to 29 at the CCIB, an essential event for professionals related to dentistry and oral health. More than 2.5 million euros were invested in the congress, which, according to the company, had an economic impact of 9 million euros. In the era of the petit comité, the XXL congress, a meeting of an entire community of knowledge, makes more sense than ever, especially if it is committed to two strategic paths: internationalization and multidisciplinarity.

The Congress of Periodontology and Oral Health, SEPA Barcelona 2025, organized by the SEPA Foundation, has been a record edition in terms of attendance, number of stands… but also in terms of conversations, meetings, initiatives and emotions. We review its main dimensions.

A complete professional upgrade

This congress was a concentrate of training: more than 200 national and international speakers, fifty monographic sessions on current scientific and clinical topics, lectures, workshops, corporate forums, surgeries explained by experts, among other formats. Everything to stay up to date.

The prevention and management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases (on the rise in Spain) were central themes of the scientific program, which also covered the relationship between oral health and general health, the utilities of AI in dentistry, or the prevention of oral cancer… And if it’s a question of updating, without surprise there was a prominent role for digital dentistry, with a program aimed at showing how the digital tools can optimize treatments.

The professional management of the dental practice also played a leading role, with a specific congress that included sessions on innovation and sustainability of the dental practice, measurement and evaluation of management, leadership skills, managing a practice in a digital environment, the impact of AI in clinics, and how to use social networks. Alberto Monje, secretary general of SEPA, commented in this regard that “it was an interdisciplinary and transversal congress, with a comprehensive vision of dentistry”, with a clear idea of opening the focus to other disciplines and having a more complete vision of health.

Multidisciplinarity

It was another key idea of the scientific program, with sessions organized with other scientific societies, such as the International Team for Implantology (ITI), the Osteology Foundation (OF), the Oral Reconstruction Foundation (ORF) or the AVOLA Association. In this context of international alliances, the Dentaid Research Center Room hosted a variety of conferences and debates. Another group that was reached was the pharmacist, with the third edition of Sepa Farma, a meeting point for pharmacy teams that aims to promote collaboration between these professionals and the dental practice. A congress that is open to other groups rather than remaining inbred allows for improved collaboration with other professionals and fosters understanding.

A variety of formats

Master sessions with experts were combined with more interactive, practical and clinically realistic formats. In addition, innovative sessions were held, such as presentations in "duel or confrontation" format between world leaders with opposing techniques, as well as video demonstrations of advanced techniques around teeth and implants, among which the sessions called "Game of Thrones" or "Clinical Reels" stood out.

More than 5,000m2 of commercial exhibition

The stand area brought together 104 companies and showcased the latest innovations in the sector. In addition, the event featured spaces designed to foster the exchange of experiences with professionals from all over the world in a dynamic environment.

Internationalization

This is another key feature of this event: professionals from 70 countries attended, including world-renowned experts. SEPA has been committed to internationalization for more than a decade and has conceived this event as an international meeting for specialists in all areas of dentistry. For example, 290 attendees came from Mexico. "One of our goals is to ensure that world experts want to show their findings and techniques at our congress and that the program attracts participants not only from Latin America, but also from non-Spanish-speaking countries," according to Alberto Monje. In this area, a joint scientific session between SEPA and the Saudi Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (SSPI) was held.

Significant economic impact

The organizers estimate a direct impact for the city of between 3.4 and 5.4 million euros, to which should be added between 1.4 and 3.3 million euros of indirect impact, and the induced impact, which represents around 30-50% of the total impact. The approximate total impact would be 9 million euros, another example of the enormous economic weight of our industry.

... and a moment of positioning for the city

Beyond the economic impact, the president of SEPA, José Nart, assures that "this scientific meeting of great international impact places Barcelona as the epicenter of innovation and excellence in periodontics and implantology, and represents a unique opportunity for the Catalan dental community to share knowledge with the world's leading experts".

For his part, SEPA's deputy executive director, Jaume Pros, commented that:

"SEPA Barcelona's success is the culmination of a multidisciplinary strategic project deployed over the last 15 years, combining SEPA's values with excellence in the management of non-profit scientific entities. Planning and brand building is the key to SEPA becoming a clear reference for Spanish dentistry and international periodontology. This is the result of a lot of hard work and we must continue to innovate with rigor and innovation, in close collaboration with all SEPA's stakeholders and the key players for the success of the events: venues, destinations and industry professionals, among whom eventoplus is clearly an essential guide". Well, thanks to them :)
