This is one of the conclusions IBTM anticipates in its World Trends Report 2027: a shift in direction for the industry in which the question will be not only how to make events more appealing, but what they leave attendees with. In recent years, the business events sector has revolved around two ideas: personalization and transformation. IBTM’s World Trends Report 2027 proposes taking it a step further: regeneration, understood as the ability of events to foster lasting relationships and challenge the narratives that shape how we view the world.

An economy that must value human thought

The report estimates the value of the so-called “brain economy”—a concept that describes the growing importance of imagination, learning, and the ability to think—at 6.2 trillion dollars. It stands to reason that, as AI gradually automates routine tasks, cognitive skills will become more valuable. And this is where events can be a valuable resource.

Therefore, in this regard, the report asks whether we have underestimated the importance of networking in recent years. In a context where people are increasingly feeling isolated at work, the event offers an opportunity to build trust and professional friendships. And this is where the concept of regeneration called for in the report is put to the test: talking about meaningful relationships is easy; designing them is more difficult.

In other words, the opportunity lies not in adding more content or increasing the number of meetings, but in asking what kind of conversations you want to facilitate and what formats make them possible.
