What is the daily life of the event manager of a large company? What difficulties, what joys, what anecdotes do they experience in their working days? Carla Luca de Tena, marketing manager, tells us with a touch of humour the life of "final customer" of our industry. Enjoy. But read carefully: along with many smiles, you will get a better understanding of the sacred client. We leave the word to her avatar, Mary.

Hi there, I´m Mary Croquette

Let me tell you about…

BEGINNINGS

Today is the first day of my adventures in the wonderful world of Event Management and I want to let you in on it. If you want a giggle, follow me through each edition. You won´t regret it as I´m sure you will be able to identify.

I started my adventures in this wonderful world 9 years ago. A lot can happen in that time. Tons have changed throughout the years but there are some things that never change and if they do, you start to miss them…you laugh, and you laugh a hell of a lot.

When I got here, replacing the crème de la crème of colleagues, everyone wanted to compare me to her saying, “your colleague used to do it better and faster”, “your colleague used to give me as many gifts as I asked for”, “your colleague was at all of my events from dusk till dawn” and then after speaking to “your amazing colleague”, it dawns on you that they used to say the exact same thing to her when she started. The whole “testing the water” idea is a regular occurrence during the first few months.

And that unbeatable feeling when everyone knows about Event Management and Marketing, you know what I´m talking about, right? It seems like when it comes to planning an event or after it has already taken place, everyone would have done it better than you, the colour of the tablecloth, the king or queen cutlery, the candles, the music, the drinks, the croquettes.

THE CROQUETTES!!!

Yes my friends, the croquette is the crux of any event, and you know it. Don´t resist this piece of trivia, because as soon as you do, your happiness will reach unreachable heights.

And you think: Why don´t they go away and sell, draw up the invoice and leave me in peace?! Let´s face it, they are going nowhere; they are going to be in your dreams, in your thoughts, in the bathroom reading a magazine, their little faces popping up everywhere like Chucky… That obsession of copying every single person into an email, all they´re missing is to copy in the CEO to complain about something, but…when you do a good job? The very same people don´t give you a pat on the back, but if they do, they have no intention of copying in the same CEO they copied when they had a quibble about the colour of the tablecloth.

To cut a long story short: Do what you do but someone will always do it better. You have your own satisfaction of knowing, beyond doubt, like when you hit the golf ball and it makes a “clock” noise, that you did a phenomenal job. In this sector, there is no need to toot your own horn because everyone else does a good enough job themselves of stepping on your moment of glory.

And now, if you´ll excuse me, I have to go and plan an event for 500 people with a budget of €2000…I´m looking forward to seeing the briefing I give the agency. Bless them, the saints that put up with us. Well, sweet dreams, dreaming of all sorts minus the croquettes, I hope.

And despite it all, I´m crazy about my job. He who is born passionate, dies passionate.

Best wishes,

Mary Croquette
