What is ‘NetZero Events’, the international commitment of the MICE industry? What do ChatGPT and artificial intelligence for events mean? Companies still far from defining sustainability targets in MICE
What is the daily life of the event manager of a large company? What difficulties, what joys, what anecdotes do they experience in their working days? Carla Luca de Tena, marketing manager, tells us with a touch of humour the life of "final customer" of our industry. Enjoy. But read carefully: along with many smiles, you will get a better understanding of the sacred client. We leave the word to her avatar, Mary.

Hi there, I´m Mary Croquette

Let me tell you about…

TRADESHOWS

What is the most common question at an event: “Hi, what do you have?”

And once again you get the urge to say…I have…hopes of winning the lottery and going to the Caribbean, I have…an urge to scream, I have…a desire to sprint off like a coyote, I have…but no, you smile and say to them, “fill out this form and I´ll give you a polo shirt”, and when you think you´ve gotten off the hook, they ask you to change the size and they stand there hesitant with a sour face while other people pile up to go over the same conversation (like Groundhog Day) and they ask you: “But does it shrink?” and once again you get the urge to say: “This isn´t El Corte Inglés” but if you´re having a good day, that same person is in luck when you reply: “Well, in all honesty we haven´t had any complaints and we´ve been giving away these polo shirts for years”.

You could go on explaining that the supplier you found is fantastic and that you receive the order in a few days, in spite of the fact you order it 48 hours before because they hadn´t approved the budget earlier, but…it´s not a matter of boring the staff and retelling the mishaps to anyone.

Honestly though, is El Corte Inglés not a constant in your professional life too? To top it all off, at the weekend your partner says to you: “We have to go to El Corte Inglés for sugared almonds” and once again, with your endless patience you picture yourself replying: “I don´t give a…….about the sugared almonds!” but no, in the end, to preserve couple stability you say: “Sure honey, whenever you want”.

There are two things that are omnipresent in my day-to-day life, El Cortés Inglés and Groundhog Day. You´ll figure out why, although I´m sure you have already guessed as it happens to you too. To cut a long story short: Thank God for El Corte Inglés.

Now if you´ll excuse me, I have to hunt online for the latest model gift to satisfy both the client as well as sales, which isn´t exactly easy with 3 days to spare and a budget that wouldn´t cover a packet of nuts. And despite it all, I´m crazy about my job. You learn something from everything, absolutely everything. And it can be used in more places than what we think.

Best wishes,

Mary Croquette
