What is ‘NetZero Events’, the international commitment of the MICE industry? What do ChatGPT and artificial intelligence for events mean? Companies still far from defining sustainability targets in MICE
Cruel summer: it has meant a rebound in Covid cases that undoubtedly hurts us. Perhaps it is not surprising that the fact of going from total confinement to a lot of freedom of movement leads many to relax and that, in Spain as in many other countries, an increase in cases. Also in our country, the media obsession with this monotheme makes us think even more negatively. With the upturn in cases, we may have the impression that meeting is becoming delicate. Here comes our responsibility: to make events safe and to show that they can be done. For one simple reason: a professional event is one of the safest places in the world. By Eric Mottard

We are one of the safest places in the world. In a social context that easily identifies the event with danger, we have to know that a professional event, organized responsibly, is among the safest places there is. A responsible agency, an identification of who is coming, a possible temperature measurement, a defined protocol, an on-site team to ensure compliance… All this makes the event an environment not only acceptable, but exemplary. I have been to several professional events in June-July (OPC Madrid, I’m +, Travel Advisors, in addition to our event at Teatro Goya), and these types of events have an absolute concern for health security and end up being very safe environments. In fact, the Travel Advisors event was certified by Veritas for its anti-covid protection policy. This indicates a safety concern that you don’t see for the rest of our lives. Your bar, the subway, the store… do not have such a close monitoring of security.

There is no reason why we have to be the last. Given the security that events bring, there is no reason to consider that events should be banned longer or harder than the rest of our lives. If we go back to school, to companies, to bars, to social gatherings, to public transport… then professional events have all the legitimacy in the world. And as professionals, it is easy for us to get the impression that we will only be able to return when the situation is perfect and after these other spheres of our lives… but it is not like that. Look at a terrace, a meeting with friends, the subway, and a professional event, and tell me on a health level in which environment you feel safest.

The responsibility is to reactivate as well. Each one of us, and each company, has a social role (they all shout it out in their annual report). Participating in the reactivation is an obvious responsibility these days. Making the effort to reconnect with clients or employees does not mean taking the easy path, but it does take the one that is most responsible for society. We have to sell this idea that we all have to make the effort to consume again, communicate, connect, motivate, train, etc. The withdrawal is not the responsible way.

… Only if we are exemplary. Obviously all this is only valid if we apply absolutely safe measures. But let’s not forget that an event is organized by a company or an institution that plays its brand, and will want to ensure maximum security. No company today wants to organize an event like crazy. In addition, our sector, venues, catering, personnel companies and obviously agencies, have defined their protocols and today offer a very high level of security.

We do not have to get carried away by headlines that make us think that events cannot be held. We have done our homework, now we have to convince ourselves and clients (and their internal clients), that the professional event is absolutely possible, and absolutely necessary today.
