It sounds cliché, I know, but “a picture is worth a thousand words” as long as the context in which the image is generated is taken into account. At events, visual content plays a key role in generating impact and capturing attention, as well as in understanding the message being communicated or its objectives. A clear example of this is the installation that Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) and the adam&eveDDB agency have prepared in the Westfield London shopping center. As a reminder that suicide is the leading cause of death among young people aged 15-34 in the UK, 6,929 birthday balloons will decorate the site from September 9 to 11. One balloon for each young person who did not get to celebrate their next birthday in the last decade.

“Missed Birthdays” is the latest campaign launched by CALM to raise awareness of the major problem of suicide among young people. To mark World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, the Westfield London shopping center hosted an installation of 6,929 birthday balloons, one for every young person who has committed suicide in the UK in the last 10 years.

The balloons, designed and created by Creative Giants, are printed with the age that each of these people would have celebrated on their birthdays if they had not committed suicide. In addition to the thousands of balloons, the installation also includes voice notes from family and friends of the deceased explaining the pain that suicide brings and remembering the missing young people. Children’s Scrap Project will reuse these balloons in craft projects once the installation ends.
