Emergency Medical Services (EMS) have transformed from patient transport to advanced medical care at scene and during transport to definitive care… but they are undergoing important changes. EMS Copenhagen decided to organize the first EMS congress in Europe, which gathered 1,100 doctors, paramedics, nurses and experts. Here are some of the activities of this highly practical event.

Cadaver Lab, designed to improve practitioner competence at invasive emergency procedures in a safe and controlled environment. The lab utilized fresh, unembalmed cadavers, which closely simulate the anatomy and feel of an actual patient.

EMS2016 Championship. 12 teams from around the world competed in this educational experience. The competition was scenario-based events that test each team’s ability to manage patients in various circumstances.

European Trauma Course. In this 2.5 days Life Support hands-on course, candidates were trained in small groups resembling trauma teams working in a shock room environment.

Taking care of yourself starts before emergencies, on Tuesday morning the delegates could experience Copenhagen through a morning run. And on Wednesday morning, they could get a nice refreshing start of the day as they were all invited to a morning swim.

Beyond delegates, the event also involved the public: Together with Falck, Danish Emergency Management Agency, Greater Copenhagen Fire Department, Danish Police, Emergency Medical Services in Copenhagen EMS2016 hosted a emergency management scenario where the involved demonstrated their ability to handle a large-scale accident in an emergency management scenario. A good example of how an event can go beyond the specialists and enable a true awareness-building with the local public.

The gala involved key personalities, from Her Royal Highness Crown Princess to the Minister of Health and the Regional President. It took place at the Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center and was handled by convention and event agency Crone & Co.

The event will be help in Copenhagen next year too. The city worked well. “Copenhagen was a focal point; it was used as an integrated part of the congress”, says Kirstine Vestergård Nielsen, Senior Executive Consultant to The Capital Region of Denmark and manager of this event. All hotels, sights and attractions where within walking distance of the congress venue which, for the super green destination, is clearly a plus point.
