Spain will become the first country in mainland Europe to host the Ryder Cup twice when Camiral, on the Costa Brava near Barcelona, hosts the biennial tournament between Europe and the United States in 2031. The Ryder Cup has grown enormously since 1997, when it was first held in Spain, becoming one of the most important sporting events in the world due to its significant economic impact and global visibility for the host region and country.

In 1997, Valderrama (Cádiz) hosted this international event, which is remembered for its significant economic and media impact: “The legacy for sport, tourism and the visibility of golf in Spain was incredible. Spanish golf has grown a lot in the last 25 years thanks to that Ryder Cup, which helped popularise the sport, build public courses and inspire new generations,” said Juan Guerrero-Burgos, president of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation.

As part of the agreement for the region to host the Ryder Cup in six years’ time, Estrella Damm will be the official beer of the tournament. It will also be the main sponsor of the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship on the DP World Tour for five years from 2026, with the 2028, 2029 and 2030 editions to be held at Camiral.

The Catalan Regional Government is already working on the social legacy that will take the form of a comprehensive programme of sporting and social activities: promoting golf, fostering social cohesion, raising the profile of golf courses throughout the region and implementing sustainable measures.

Camiral, formerly known as PGA Catalunya, opened in 1999 and was acquired by Denis O’Brien in 2008. It currently has two championship courses, the PGA National Golf Academy and the largest training facilities in Europe.
