According to the Union of International Associations (UIA), 2003 saw virtually no growth in meetings globally (+0.2 per cent) and there has been a worldwide fall in international meetings of 8 per cent for the past decade and 10 per cent in the last five years.

The USA topped the ranking with 1,068 meetings (11.31 per cent of all meetings) followed by France (647 meetings, 6.85 per cent), Germany (487 meetings, 5.16 per cent), Italy (437 meetings, 4.63 per cent) and UK with 420 meetings, 4.45 per cent of the total. We can highlight that these statistics are quite different from those published by ICCA, which ranks Spain as the second most important city for congresses and conventions, after the USA.

The top five international meeting cities 2003 were Paris, Geneva, Vienna, Brussels and London.
